Laser Hair Removal Before and Aftercare
Before Your Treatment
A patch test is required before your first laser hair removal treatment.
Please follow the guidance below to help prepare your skin and achieve the best possible results:
- Avoid hair removal methods that pull the hair from the root, including waxing, threading, epilating and tweezing.
- Avoid sun exposure, sunbeds and fake tanning products.
- Avoid using heavy or highly active skincare products on the treatment area.
- Cleanse the target area thoroughly before your appointment. The skin should be free from creams, oils, deodorant, makeup and other products.
- Wear loose, comfortable clothing that allows easy access to the treatment area.
- Shave the treatment area before your appointment, following the instructions provided by your practitioner.
After Your Treatment
The treated skin may feel slightly tender and may appear red or swollen following your appointment. In some cases, the area may look or feel similar to mild sunburn.
These effects should settle naturally and will usually improve significantly within 48 hours, although some reactions may take longer to resolve. Minor bruising may occasionally occur and can take one to two weeks to disappear.
If you are concerned about the healing process at any stage, please contact Manology.
Recommended Aftercare
- Keep the treated area clean and dry for 48 hours.
- Apply a cold pack to the area if you experience discomfort, irritation or tenderness. Do not apply ice directly to the skin.
- Apply aloe vera gel for three days after treatment to help soothe the skin. A gentle, fragrance-free moisturiser may also be used.
- Wear loose-fitting clothing for at least 48 hours to reduce friction against the treated area.
What to Avoid
- Avoid perfumes, fake tan and other harsh or fragranced products for 72 hours.
- Avoid applying makeup to the treated area for 48 hours, as this may increase the risk of irritation or infection.
- Do not rub, pick or scratch the treated area, particularly if the skin has crusted, scabbed or blistered, as this may increase the risk of scarring.
- Avoid shaving the treated area for 72 hours.
- Do not wax, tweeze, thread or epilate the treated area throughout your full course of laser hair removal treatments.
- Avoid exfoliating the treated area for 72 hours.
- Avoid products containing alpha hydroxy acids, retinol or glycolic acid for at least seven days.
- Avoid strenuous exercise, saunas, steam rooms, sunbeds and excessive heat for 72 hours. Heat and sweating can irritate sensitive skin and may slow the healing process.
- Avoid swimming for 72 hours.
- Avoid excessive alcohol and caffeine for 48 hours.
- Minimise exposure to ultraviolet light to reduce the risk of hyperpigmentation or darkening of the skin.
- Apply a broad-spectrum sunscreen of SPF 50 or higher for at least two weeks following treatment, as the skin may be more sensitive to sunlight.
When to Seek Advice
You must seek medical attention and contact your Manology practitioner if you experience signs or symptoms of infection following treatment. These may include hot, red or shiny skin, pus, a fever or feeling generally unwell.
Please contact Manology as soon as possible if you notice any unexpected or unwanted side effects.
Your practitioner will advise you when further treatment or follow-up appointments are required. Please make every effort to attend any recommended appointments, even when the recovery process appears to be progressing normally and there are no visible complications.
